Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama's paintings, installation art, and sculptures are celebrated worldwide as is the Japanese artist, who was born in 1929 in Matsumoto. As an avant-garde artist who moved to New York City in the late 1950s, she is credited with influencing the Pop Art movement in America. After living in New York for 17 years, she returned to Japan and voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital. In 2017, at age 88, she opened the Yayoi Kusama Museum near the hospital and her studio.
